List of Remembrances

This is a list of points for reflection which I wrote some months ago.

I am much helped when I remember, and much hurt when I forget, the following things:

  1. Of the fleeting nature of life and the imminence of death

I may die tonight.

I desire that I, and all of God’s people in all the world, should wake up every morning aware that they have no certainty that they will live for one more minute, but that they may well die and be with Christ in 1 minute, or less.

I desire to remember that I could be called to give an account of my faith before people who mean to kill me for believing in Christ;

and that any believer could be so;

or else merely be murdered in the street for it,

or tortured;

or anything else.

I desire to remember that my time is ever fleeting + I must use it ever to do only God’s will;

and do all of God’s will for me;

and leave nothing of God’s will for me undone;

and not ever do anything which is not God’s will for me.

  1. My salvation

Christ, the Second Person of the Triune God, who transcends and is infinitely above His creation, yet who upholds His creation by the word of His power,

– entered His creation, taking on the form of a man – “became flesh and dwelt among us”;

– died for our sins – bore the infinite wrath of God for our sins – the elect’s

– loved the elect before the foundation of the world + planned to save them;

– has pardoned my sins;

– has forgiven my sins;

– has reconciled me to God in Himself;

and thus I have peace with God.

He has reconciled me to God.

He does not count my sins against me.

The Holy Spirit “made me alive who [was] dead in trespasses and sins, in which [I] also once walked according to the course of this world…”

The Holy Spirit revealed Christ to my soul, in a lovely sight of Him in the gospel, and in His worthiness to seek His own glory in all He does. – remember these things according to the spirit of God’s word in the following passage of His word: “I sought the LORD and He heard my cry, and delivered me from all my fears.”

Having the Spirit, who was given to me by God, I now have the earnest, or the proof, or the down-payment, or the “engagement ring”, or the assurance, of my inheritance which is in heaven, “the inheritance of the saints in light.”

  1. Evangelism and the unconverted

I desire, and desire that all God’s people should desire, that all people might be saved who are now on earth who are not saved; + desire that all God’s people would work to bring the gospel to all people who are now alive upon the earth.

I desire that I and all God’s people would consider it a horrible thought that any person now living on the earth should be in Hell for all eternity, + in love desire their salvation.

I desire all God’s people to devise the most methodically devised plans + means for evangelism to reach all people now on the earth with the gospel.

I desire that it should always be our desire that every soul now living on the earth should be saved;

and that it would be the most horrible thing to our minds if there were even only one soul on the earth which is lost – but so much the more horrible the thought that there are countless millions of souls now living on the earth, who could be saved if the Spirit chooses so, and who cannot be saved without Christ + hearing the gospel of Christ, but who are now only condemned unbelievers, and may any moment die + go to hell without any hope of ever being delivered.

I desire to witness to all people I know.

I desire to study how to do this most effectively + in all circumstances, in ways appropriate to all of my difference circumstances where I meet any people.

  1. Future glory

He has made it that I will be with Him in heaven for all eternity, in love, in perfect peace + love + joy, worshipping + being delighted and satisfied in Him, glorifying Him alone.

  1. Present joy

I desire to be now delighting in Him + satisfied in Him, + glorifying Him alone, + glorying in Him.

I desire that all of God’s people should now be delighting + being satisfied in Him, + glorifying Him alone and glorying in Him.

I desire all of God’s people to remember these things for the same benefit + joy + blessing + peace that I have when I remember them.

I desire to rejoice in my salvation in Christ, my being in Christ, reconciled to Him, being delivered now from all my fears.

I desire to speak to all of God’s people with whom I have contact in any way, in a way that makes evident their need to always be remembering these things, + that I sense my own need to remember these things, + that I desire them to speak to me in such a way that makes evident my need to remember these things, + that they sense their own need to remember these things, + that they desire me to remind them of these things, etc.

I desire that I may hang this document upon my wall, so that I may read it when I wake up every morning + throughout the day many times.

  1. Present fear and joy

I desire to pray concerning all of these things in this document every day.

I desire to pray that God would keep me from sinning;

that God would keep me from the devil – the evil one;

that God would keep me from temptation of any kind;

that God would keep all of His people from all of these things.

I desire to remember the theological preconditions of human knowledge, conscience, all human experience, etc.

I think this is very important to my sanctification; but only if understood truly – in the gospel. I believe it will help me too to evangelize.

I love to write theologically/philosophically as a means of evangelism.

I love to speak theologically/philosophically as a means of evangelism.

I love to write theologically/philosophically to exhort the saints to love Christ + be sanctified more, and to exhort them to evangelize.

My morning + whenever-else prayer time + Bible reading is of crucial importance to me in all things + I cannot view any other thing rightly without God’s word dwelling in my richly.

I want to know God’s word more.

  1. Love and gravity

I desire that I and all of God’s people should “remember [their] brethren and sisters in Christ who are in bonds for His sake, as though [we] were with them.”
